Course Description

This course is an introduction to novelists, poets, dramatists, and prose writers whose work contributed to the diverse range of writing in the Victorian period. Students will study a range of texts in their social, religious, scientific, philosophical and aesthetic contexts, covering issues such as the Industrial Revolution, imperialism, faith and doubt, and the ‘Woman Question’.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)

CILO-1: Identify a range of styles, genres, and formats characteristic of Victorian literature, and describe how they are affected by the different social and intellectual contexts of the period. CILO-2: Explain the development of the novel and different types of realism in Victorian fiction. CILO-3: Identify types of narrative and lyrical poems in the Victorian period. CILO-4: Identify the different theories of art that governed literary production in the Victorian period. CILO-5: Learn how to describe and evaluate key themes or texts on the course.
